The Effects of Praise in On-task Behaviors of Students with Autism in Inclusive Settings

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of teacher behavior-specific praise in students¡¯ on-task behavior of three elementary school students with autism who had day dreaming, disturbing others, and left group etc. in inclusive settings. Participants were three general education teachers and three elementary school students with autism in inclusive classrooms. The data was gathered by direct-observation, frequency count sampling in 20 minute continuous intervals with ¡®on?off-task behavior,¡¯ data sheet and ¡®teacher praise¡¯ data sheet. Results indicated that the students¡¯ on-task behavior increased when the teachers¡¯ behavior-specific praise increased. Implications for research and practice were discussed in the study.
